but to me, it's money that i earned. man: to some people, social security is just a number. i count on social security. and i don't want washington politicians like george allen... privatizing it. if george allen wants to risk his own money on wall street... that's fine. but i don't want him risking mine. george allen just isn't watching out for us. anncr: the democratic senatorial campaign committee is... responsible for the content of this advertising. this is fox 5 news at 10:00. tonight hurricane fears, sandy is on its way north after barreling through haiti and cuba today. forecasters fear it could turn into what they're calling a frankenstorm. that is a monster combination of wind, rain and maybe even snow. good to have you with us.
11:31 pm
i'm will thomas. take a live look right now at miami, florida. you can see giant waves crashing over the street. power outages are being reported, public school classes canceled for friday andthe storm not just pounding here in south florida. it could cause huge problems and billions of dollars in damage along the east coast. let's get right to it tonight. hurricane sandy fears, gary mcgrady is in the weather have to begin our storm coverage. >> thanks, will. this will be a high impact storm all up and down the east coast. we'll go right to the satellite picture to show you. it doesn't look very organized here. as a matter of fact, it has been weakening just a little bit over the last several hours. it's encountering strong winds aloft. we call that wind sheer and that tends to buffet the storm around a bit. winds are down to 90 miles an hour. movement has slowed dramatically. now it's moving north, north we
11:32 pm
have at 13 miles per hour. the pressure is up just a little bit at 968. this is the track r the national hurricane center. this will take us through the weekend. not much has changed here from earlier from 5:00, but subtly a few things have changed now and that's when you bring the storm up into making landfall in the northeast. it is looking increasingly more likely now that this storm's greatest impact will be from the delmarva right up to providence and at least the new england states and by compact we're talking about a little bit of everything. i don't want you to concentrate so much on the red line there. however, the center of this track is through new jersey. it may have shifted a little bit more down to the south and to the southwest and that does not bode well for new york city, for manhattan, those highly populated areas there. philadelphia comes into play
11:33 pm
with this as well. if you look at this and if this is a perfect forecast, it's probably not this far out, but i think we're beginning to get a good idea where this storm is going to go, we are still on the southern end of that which means we wouldn't get the highest wind, we wouldn't get the heaviest rain and we probably won't get the greatest effects from this storm. basically we're talking about high wind, a great deal of beach erosion, very high surf along with a storm surge more than likely high tide and an astronomical high tide. so the flooding will be a little greater and, of course, there will be flooding rain and you mentioned snow, will. there's colder air to the north and west, so the higher elevations will get some snow out of this, no snow here for d.c. >> higher elevations and snow could be a silver lining, gary. utility companies are preparing for sandy. bg and e is planning for hundreds of thousands of potential outages by putting workers on stand-by bringing in
11:34 pm
at least 500 workers from other states. utility companies say they've learned lessons from past storms that will help them reduce damage and recovery time. hurricane sandy is now pounding the bahamas and leaving a deadly path behind. cuban officials announced 11 deaths from the storm. fox's phil keating is in miami with the latest. >> reporter: hurricane sandy now threatening the entire east coast of the united states. forecasters say it's expected to be a rare mix of a hurricane and a winter storm before possibly hitting the new york and new jersey area on tuesday. new york city's mayor says no reason to panic. >> we've opened the office of emergency management situation room already and the nyc coastal storm plan was activated early this morning. >> reporter: officials in the northeast preparing for the storm and relying on lessons learned from last year's hurricane irene. >> you saw in irene we didn't move a lot of people out of
11:35 pm
seniors homes and hospitals and if necessary, we're prepared to do the same thing. >> reporter: hurricane sandy has already ripped through jamaica and cuba and now it's in the bahamas. heavy rain and strong winds damaged many homes, knocking down power lines and upreceipting trees. the cuban government -- uprooting trees. the cuban government said more than 50,000 people evacuated before the storm made landfall. terror-related hearings are to be delayed at u.s. base in guantanamo bay. the storm did kill four people in the caribbean. for the rest of thursday and through friday the entire east coast of florida from key largo up to jacksonville will be feeling hurricane sandy, but only as a tropical storm, a lot f wind, waves and outer bands of rain and from there sandy marches north. in miami phil keating, fox news. >> stay with fox 5 throughout the next 90 minutes as we track
